Raise a Glass: Carnaby’s Wine Odyssey Through Italy’s Finest

30 April, 2024 | Alex Teoli

They say life’s too short to drink bad wine and there are few who embody this philosophy more passionately than Carnaby Wines. Established in 1999, these guys have carved a niche for themselves in bringing over unique, upmarket, wines to Malta.

In that sense, their mission is a simple one, to provide the Maltese market with high-quality wines that would oherwise be unavailable elsewhere. Now, they’re expanding their horizon to the sun-drenched vineyards of Italy.

Their latest venture has seen them expand their portfolio to include more premium Italian wines, from the vineyard-covered hillsides of Tuscany to the glacial valleys of the Alps across to the Apennines that meander their way down south.

In their dedication to Italian wine culture, passion, and tradition, Carnaby Wines aims to be ambassadors, ensuring quality, authenticity, and customer satisfaction.

We’ve taken a quick dive into Carnaby’s portfolio of top Italian wineries to discover more about their exceptional offerings and dedication to celebrating life’s finer pleasures.

Super Tuscan!

Starting with a selection of wines hailed as Super Tuscan, these wines transcend boundaries by harnessing foreign grape varieties that adapt exceptionally well to the terroirs of Tuscany. As such, they are highly valued and sought after with examples including Bolgheri Sassicaia by Tenuta San Guido Estate.

Featuring a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet, the 2016 vintage was awarded 100 points by American wine critic Robert Parker. For context, Robert has tasted over 35,000 wines with fewer than 20 being awarded full marks.

Unfortunately, with such a sought after wine, counterfeiting is of significant concern. In 2020, Italian authorities seized 4,000 counterfeit bottles, valued up to €360 (£325) each. That’s why Carnaby Wines safeguards against this risk by sourcing directly from its trusted producers.

Wine in the Alpine

Venturing further north into the Italian wine landscape, Carnaby's exploration leads to Alto Adige, home to the northernmost vineyards in Italy. Shielded from strong winds due to its location within a prehistoric glacial valley, the wines of Termeno as Alto Adige capture the essence of alpine viticulture.

As well as earning numerous Tre Biccieri awards, the Gewürztraminer Epokale was also one of the few wines awarded a perfect score by Robert Parker.

Sardinia - Turriga, Antonio Argolas

Across the Tyrrhenian Sea lies the Italian island of Sardinia and within it, a selection from the esteemed Argiolas winery. Rooted in Sardinian tradition, wines like turriga)and Costamolino Vermentino epitomise the island's rich winemaking heritage, offering a tantalizing glimpse into Sardinia's vinous tapestry. Each bottle reflects the terroir and craftsmanship of its respective region.

This expansion into Italian wines underscores Carnaby's dedication to sourcing premium wines from around the world, offering their customers an unparalleled experience of taste and discovery.

As they continue to expand their portfolio, Carnaby Wines remains steadfast in their mission to celebrate life's finer pleasures, one glass at a time. For qoutes and more information, contact them today on 9947 7580.
